A water purifier rarely breaks overnight. It gives small warnings for weeks before it stops. Catching them early protects your family's health and saves money, because a cheap filter change today prevents a costly membrane or pump replacement later.
1. The water flow has become slow
If the storage tank takes much longer to fill, the sediment or carbon pre-filters are usually choked. The pump then works harder against a blockage, which shortens its life. A filter check is the first step.
2. The taste or smell has changed
A flat, bitter, salty or plastic taste is never "normal". It can mean exhausted carbon filters, a worn membrane, or bacterial growth in a storage tank that has not been cleaned for months.
3. Output TDS is rising
If you own a TDS meter, compare input and output water. A healthy membrane removes most dissolved solids. When the output TDS creeps close to the input value, the membrane is failing. Read our guide to the ideal TDS level for drinking water.
4. Water is leaking
Drops under the purifier usually come from loose push-fit connectors, cracked filter housings or a worn O-ring. Leaks can damage the kitchen wall and the electrical parts, so get them fixed quickly.
5. The pump is noisy or never stops
A pump that keeps running after the tank is full points to a faulty float switch, high-pressure switch or non-return valve. It wastes water and electricity and burns out the pump.
6. The UV light is off or blinking
In RO+UV purifiers, the UV lamp kills bacteria and viruses. When the indicator is off, your purifier may look fine but is no longer disinfecting the water.
7. It has been more than six months
Even without symptoms, schedule a service every 3–6 months. Borewell water with iron, hardness or high TDS — common in Pilibhit, Bareilly, Delhi and Hyderabad — needs the shorter cycle.
